Big Brother is Watching You

A modern day Gargoyle in Bath Stone

The first usage for gargoyles seems to have been in the early 1200’s as channels to shed rainwater away from buildings and their foundations.  They were sometimes described as a warning to the populace with the gargoyle metaphorically saying, ‘Hey you! Yes you! Watch your step we’ve got our eye on you’ believing them to ward off unwanted spirits.  The Royal Academy of Engineering produced a report highlighting the astonishing numbers of CCTV cameras in this country with one for every 14 people.  I felt it would be interesting to create a modern day gargoyle with a degree of humour and cynicism of a man clutching a camera peering at the unsuspecting public from high up on a building surreptitiously taking away their privacy
