‘Love bears fruit’ – it seemed powerful
to produce a carving out of stone that might touch
someone who glanced at it. The shape of the letters
L O V E were inspired by Robert Indiana’s giant
pop art sculpture now in New York although the image
first appeared in poems he wrote in 1958 when he stacked
LO and VE on top of one another. It was conceived when
USA was consumed by the Vietnam War.
‘Bears’ means bearing love for others; to tolerate or endure; to
withstand stress, difficulty or attrition and to yield produce. My decision
to extend the letter ‘f ’ was so that the ‘f ’ became
the main vine branch to bear the abundance of fruit. Once fully complete,
I envisage this carving being sunk into the centre of a weathered bench or
split tree trunk, sealed with toughened glass to both protect and bring it
flush to seat level. This enables 2 people to share some time and possibly
wine together.
